HP Laserjet 1020 on OSX 128

Posted by andy

We purchased a couple of dirt cheap LaserJet 1020 printers for the office and home. While they work fine in Windows and Ubuntu Linux (with proper hackery applied) getting it to work on OSX is not straight forward. If you google around you’ll find both success and horror stories on this printer. It seems HP supports the newer 1022 model officially but not the 1020. Turns out the 1022 driver will work fine for a 1020 if, and that’s a big IF, you get Mac OSX to list it in the printer list. This thread on macosxhints.com was the most informative of all. I tried the suggestions a couple of days ago but to no avail. This morning I tried again and with success! All the steps seem to be there, but the following order worked for me:

1. Download; http://www.railsguru.com/assets/2007/4/16/1601_LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg;
2. If you have anything for the HP 1020 in ”/Library/Reciepts” delete it.
3. Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in “Printer Setup Utility”
4. Install the downloaded printer drivers
5. Remove all files from /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet. Leave the 1020 subfolder! You’ll need the contents in the next step;
6. Move all files from the 1020 subfolder to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet (the parent);
7. Restart Mac OSX, just for luck;
8. Add new printer in “Printer Setup Utility”, select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

Disclaimer: this worked for me™. No guarantee the above steps will hose your printer setup or other things.

I have had lots of promblems with the HP laserjet 1320. It installs ok but sometimes when you send a print document to it the spool file is swallowed by something and nothing prints. It is also extremely hard to set it up on the network.

Followed your lead. Worked for me. Thanks.

I just got the 1020 and haven't been able to get it working. I recently upgraded to 10.4.8 and was wondering if it still worked under 10.4.8 for you. Thanks.
4. eshock at gmail dawt comOctober 02, 2006 @ 09:15 PM
Oh man, I forgot to reinstall the package after moving the files around. Sorry, PEBCAK error.
5. Chris T.October 02, 2006 @ 10:50 PM
I couldn't get it to work on my MBP (10.4.8) using your exact procedure. However, I went back to the procedure I used for my PowerPC Mac Mini, and that worked. Basically, follow the procedure detailed in the blog post, but omit steps 5 & 6. Worked beautifully.

Does anyone know whether or not a printer driver that works under 10.4.7 will ultimately still work say for Leopard? In other words, do drivers generally need to be updated all the time to work with new OS updates? I'd hate to this 1020 useless in a year or so. thanks

Good question! Unfortunaly I have no idea! I only started with OS X @ 10.4.6. Anyone? -andy

Thanks a lot for the tip. It worked for me and my HP 1020 connected to an Intel Imac. I would like to add that I too was becoming very frustrated until I connected the printer USB cable directly into the Imac, ie not via a hub. Before I connected direct to the Imac, the computer did not recognise the printer driver and/or the printer itself depending on which USB hub I was connecting through. I was on the point of selling the printer until I fixed it tonight so thanks again to you all for your help. On a similar note, I was having problems connecting my external USB Audio Capture box (Edirol UA-25) to the Imac for exactly the same reason. So my tip is if you're having problems connecting a USB device to one of the new Imacs then try a direct connection. - Pete

MACBOOK USERS: Found on another thread I followed the instructions that I've now included below. I was on OSX 10.4.7. No matter how closely these instructions were followed, I still wasn't able to get my LJ 1020 working with my MacBook. I'd been reluctant to upgrade to 10.4.8 as I'd heard absolute horror stories about it from other users. Reluctantly, I upgraded my OS and then again (for the millionth time) followed the instructions that TheMane posted in the other forum (at macosxhints.com) (I've posted them below so that you don't have to go and search). It would seem that upgrading the OS to 10.4.8 is what has made all the difference. My new HP LJ1020 is working correctly (I am completely in utter shock!) and I can now finally get my essay done. :) If you aren't already on OSX 10.4.8, upgrade now and then follow these steps: For The MacBook (make sure you're on OSX 10.4.8): 1) Disconnect the HP 1020 if it is currently connected to the MacBook. 2) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version) 3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility" 4) If you have anything for the HP 1020 (or the 1022 from a failed installation) in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it. 5) Remove the 1020Series folder from "/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet" directory if it exists. 6) Reset the print system from the Printer Setup Utility 7) Reboot (the HP 1020 is still disconnected from the MacBook) 8) Run the installer package downloaded in step 2 9) Shut down the MacBook completely 10) While the MacBook is off, connect the HP 1020 and power the PRINTER on 11) Power on the MacBook 12) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD Thanks TheMane for posting instructions that are made for Intel Mac users.

hi, Thanks a lot for these instructions-- it didn't work at first with moving the items into the parent folder; when i just left it alone after downloading it worked fine though!

Hot damn. I spent all weekend struggling to get my HP1018 to work with my intel imac. eventually i managed to exchange it for a hp1020, which as i read here, had more chance of working. so then... i brought it home and it was all the same. hot damn. i was developing a nervous tic. i tried to follow all the directions here, and to an extent they worked. but when i went into the printer setup utility i couldn't see 'HP' as an option... so... (this is after restarting the computer by the way.) i selected 'other' in the printer setup utility. so now it's all about finding the right file on your own. i went to library/printers/hp/laserjet and if you've followed the directions above, you should see the file hplj1020PM.plugin. select it. that worked for me. i had tried selcting it a thousand times before, but i think the reason it eventually worked was that i had restarted, and followed the intructions above. thanks to all for the help, it saved me.

It still works today!

thanks very much for the hp 1020 driver info. It installed by itself on my old imacG4, but not on the new macbook. without your instructions, i'd never have gotten it to print . thanks again
15. cmsDecember 30, 2006 @ 07:32 PM
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The difference in your suggestions and others (and what made it finally work for me) was moving the files from the 1020 subfolder into the main laserjet folder. And I didn't even have to reset (for luck)! I can't thank you enough. I was about to have to purchase a new printer... now this one is saved.
16. cmsDecember 30, 2006 @ 07:40 PM
btw -- in case it helps others, I used these instructions on my Intel MacBook Pro. Perfecto!
17. JenJanuary 04, 2007 @ 06:05 AM
Like Chris, I also couldn't get it working for PowerPC. I did exactly what Chris mentioned (omitting steps 5 and 6) and it worked. However I couldn't get the printer to show in the list of printers to add in the "Print using:" section. I had to add it via Bonjour, it works! Thanks.

Andy, Great procedure! I just used on a brand new Mac with Intel Core II Duo processor running 10.4.8. I had to do one extra little think to get the procedure to work. After completing the procedure and on the first attempt to add in my HP 1020, the Printer Setup Utility saw the printer on the USB port but no 1020 driver was listed in the LLLLOOONNNGGG list of HP printers. To fix, I moved the file that contained HP printer drivers in the /library/receipts to the desktop (later I moved to an archive folder). I forget this file's name but it was something like 'HPprinterdrivers'. By the way, there was no file in /library/receipts that had the words 'HP 1020' in the filename or could even be construed to refer to the words 'HP 1020'. Next I rebooted. I went to add the printer and viola! there is was and it had already selected the correct driver. Thanks loads for starting this thread. You should set up a paypal acount and ask everyone that was helped by this procedure to send you $10! Thanks, Tim Golden

Yay! I was just about to return this 1020 and exchange for the HP 1022 ($100. more!) because it didn't come with Mac software. Thanks to these instructions, I am keeping the 1020 and printing perfectly with my Apple Express and Mac Book. THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! oh very smart person!

I just had success on a 12" G4 Powerbook running 10.4.8. I first installed the most recent drivers from HP for the 1022 printer. I then removed the package from /Library/Resources/. I then installed the package from the link above. When then adding the printer the 1020 did not show up in the HP list. But ask I clicked around looking for it, the machine auto detected the 1020 and picked that as the choice in the drop down. It felt very strange. I would suggest, after picking the USB printer, to wait a while and see if the system picks the correct driver. Good luck all. And thanks for having the link to the older driver... saved my butt.

HOW TO PRINT IN A HP LASERJET 1020 WITH A MAC I have a PowerBook G4 with OSX 10.4.8, an Airpor Express, and the cheap HP Laserjet 1020. I tried several methods without success, but the only one and really simple is to plug the USB printer connector to an Airport Express. Open Printer Utility, ckick add a printer, and the computer will recognize the printer as a Bonjour printer. You can print anything.
32. MichaelJanuary 28, 2007 @ 11:20 PM
I found that using the dmg linked to on this pages worked if I did the following: Completely deleted the laserjet folder in the Library/Printers/Hp folder. Then completed the install. I did not have to move files out of the new laserjet/1020 series folder. No restarting, no reseting, etc. Deleting the laserjet folder was the trick. Thank you.

At last, the struggle is over! After trying pretty much everything, like trying to share it on the network as a virtual postscript printer and then i tried to install the laserjet 1022 driver without any success. Thank god it worked this time. I don't need a windows machine any more to use my printer ;)

Fantastic!!!! Spent ALL day trying to reinstall HP's 1022 driver for the 1020 printer on my Mac. (They must have updated it/and crippled it for macs) 5 minutes with yours, BINGO. Sincerely, THANK YOU!!!!!!! (G5 running 10.4.8)

Has anyone been able to print using a MacBook with the Airport Extreme? I managed to get the Print Utility to recognize the printer and add it, which I thought would be the fix, but when I send something to print now, it gets stuck "looking" for the printer. What's going on? Do I need a network compatible driver? I see that others with the Aiport Express haven't had a problem.... Any help would be *very much* appreciated! (And thanks for the directions that enabled me to print with the printer connected directly to my MacBook. At least it works that way!)
46. NilayMarch 13, 2007 @ 04:24 PM

I followed these steps exactly with my new white Macbook, started MS Word, went to 'Print' and 'Add a printer,' and it worked perfectly. I'm printing away on my new HP Laserjet 1020 without any problems.
50. www.webtropolis.comMarch 28, 2007 @ 08:07 AM
I used your driver, rebooted the MacBook, unplugged the Airport Extreme and printer, then plugged the Airport Extreme and printer back in then re-connected the USB between the Airport base station and the printer. Then tried to print a simple doc which gave the opportunity to select the Bonjour version of the printer driver and voila. Mnay thanks for your help! We'd be taking the printer back to where we bought it without it.

Well boys and girls... nothing of this worked for me. I also did most of solutions from http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=40933 and nada! Only full manual mode worked. Here is my setup: MacBook Pro with 10.4.9, HP 1022n printer over IP I got 1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg from one of the links above. When installing the package it keept saying - Nothing to install. So I opened the package with Show Package Contents and opened Archive.pax.gz In this arhive there is a folder Library/Printers/hp it contains folder laserjet. I moved it to Library/Printers/hp - ah, and before that I deleted the existing folder. That was it! OS found the printer (I had previously indicated the IP address of the printer) and it started working over something called Bonjour.

Thanks for posting this helpful information. Unfortunately, it stopped working for printing via Airport connected LJ 1020 after the most recent Airport software update. Turns out, however, that there is a 4-2006 release of the 1022 drivers that does the job without any additional gymnastics: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=219&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=439322&lang=en

MacBook Pro, 2.33 ghz, OS X 10.4.9. I followed the procedure above, but skipped steps 5 and 6. I added the printer using the HP Laserjet 5 GIMP driver, quit the printer setup, relaunched it, deleted the Laserjet, and then clicked to add a new printer. For some reason, the Laserjet 1020 driver appeared as the default. Go figure. Works fine now via direct USB connection. Now to get it to work via Airport...

MACBOOK USERS: Andy's instructions didn't work for me (Intel Macbook, OSX 10.4.9). I ended up following the instructions in the comment above by miremba dated November 05 2006 which nearly worked, but when I came to add the printer in step 9), Printer Setup Utility located the 1020 OK, but could not find the drivers I had just installed, leaving the "Add" button frustratingly greyed out and inaccessible. To get it working though I had to add one extra step after miremba's step 8. Lets call it step 8.5... 8.5) Move all files from the 1020 subfolder to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet (the parent); After that, reboot and follow the rest of miremba's instructions. Thanks to both Andy and miremba. Hugely helpful! Good luck everyone else.

I have the same problem with my new HP 1200. I have read the ideas to install a windows program on part of my hard drive, try and hope hacking will work etc. This is the exact reason I sold all three of my pc's runing all kinds of windows stuff. Here is the real fix. If HP wont support you dont support them. I have purchase a brother 2040 for only 69.00 at staples and it works great. They support mac users. I am really glad I had problems with the install and drivers (HP Only) due to the fact I needed to purchase new ink for my HP895cse and another HP I owned for years. Now I can throw them In the trash like the due their customer support. Note: If you are a PC person you will find after you upgrade to vista they dont support it either. To bad a name like HP has to go downt the drain.

"I would like to comment that an opensource driver has been developed for mac os x. Search for "foo2zjs os x" in google." This is the ultimate solution to this problem. My laserjet 1020 worked fine with the 1022 hp drivers through my airport basestation flawlessly on my PPC portable. However, ever since my Intel portable upgrade I haven't been able to add or use the 1022 like in the past. This foo2zjs app works. I can now print wirelessly from my MBP to my 1022 for the first time ever. DT, good sir, may you be rewarded with gold for this valuable service you've provided (even if you just shared the link) ;)

Parthasarathi, If you follow these steps it still works with 10.4.10. I just reinstalled OS X and set it up again and it works fine. If anyone needs the drivers email me and I can send them to you.

Wow! I have spent an hour (or more) on the internet at HP's site and other "help" sites to no avail. My HP 1020 worked great under OS X.4 but I couldn't find it to install it under Leopard. I found your suggestions; followed them to the letter and now have a working printer on Leopard. Thanks for your help! THANKS THANKS THANKS! Jay
92. kaiDecember 09, 2007 @ 03:29 AM
thank you so much! easy and simple--i had panicked that it was going to be as much of a pain to install this cheap little printer in leopard as it was in OSX.4 but these instructions were awesome. 5 minutes, tops.

Thanks! i have install with this instruction on Leopard and it's work perfectly Great thank you

I am trying the Linux-foundation downloads per Sebastian's comment, and its success with others. I have ver. 10.4.11. But a glitch: in installing the 3 downloads from Linux, a box opened up requiring me to give my admin password, and I am nervous because of the risk of an OSX trojan. Is this okay?
98. JamesDecember 25, 2007 @ 07:41 PM
Thanks for the fix! Saved me having to drive into the office on a snowy day!

This was great advice- I was totally lost. I am just getting used to my MacBook and had found it difficult to think outside the PC logic. All I did was download the file from the link (step 1) and the rest all just worked out after I restarted my laptop. I am thankful more than you can know!

OMG! THANK YOU! I have the new Leopard and this worked THANK YOU!
102. FedJanuary 07, 2008 @ 10:48 PM
I am running Leopard. I have tried everything suggested to add an HP 1020. The system recognizes the printer as an HP 1020 but it doesn't appear in the driver list. Please help. The strange thing is that everything worked fine on Leopard a couple of days ago, and then it just stopped. Any suggestions on why the driver may not appear on the list please!! Also could someone please send me the list of the files that should be in the "Laserjet" subfolder in the Library. Thank you.
103. PwhiteJanuary 08, 2008 @ 03:54 AM
Thank you! Followed your instructions and my HP1020 is up and running after the restart. Thanks again!
104. FedJanuary 08, 2008 @ 05:16 AM
I reinstalled Leopard with Archive and Install; I reinstalled the HP 1020 driver from the CD that came with the printer. The iMac immediately recognized it and it works fine, like before. I ran "monolingual" yesterday. Bad idea because I think it deleted printer files that are not part part of the driver and cannot easily be reinstalled. Monolingual is not Leopard ready, suggest you don't run it.
105. NanetteJanuary 09, 2008 @ 08:04 PM
It worked! I can use the 1020 with Leopard! Thanks!

Can anyone guide me? Is it the same way if my printer is connecting thru a network, meaning there is a host computer which connected the printer while I am the network client that send printing job to the printer? Is it the same way as well> TQ!

Excellent directions! I have a Mac Mini (Intel), Mac Mini (PowerPC) and MacBook Pro notebook on my wireless network. My HP LJ 1020 is connected to the 'net via the Apple AirPort Express. based on the instructions here, everything worked very well. BTW, I am running Mac OS X Leopard. Thank again!

Andy, you're a God send, many thanks, my iMac G5 running Tiger is now working great with the printer. I just bought this printer and called HP, where the wanker told me that they didn't support this printer for Macs. Ridiculous I say, as I knew someone must have sorted this issue out.

We have used the driver you have listed on this page to connect Hp1020s to Macbooks. The driver is great and it works very well. However, when we try to connect to a HP1018 it does not work. Can anyone tell me how to connect a HP1018 to a Macbook using Leopard operation system. Please I'm not very technical so could you break in down into easy to follow non tech language? Thank you so much to anyone who can answer this question.

After 6 hours of continuously trying to create a workaround for my mac mini (10.5.2) i stumbled upon this site. fanbloodytastic... followed instructions as stated, rebooted and after about 10 secs my 1020 whirred to life. Thanks heaps, couldn't have done it without your help.

dude, good work, wife is very happy.
116. Singapore BoyFebruary 25, 2008 @ 03:05 PM
Your steps worked for me too. 10.5.2 Just to note that after step 6: "Move all files from the 1020 subfolder to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet (the parent);" I then deleted the 1020 empty folder. Wasn't sure if that was what I was supposed to do but I am a bit OCD and did not want to leave an empty folder in my system ;)

Just a tip for everyone: Move PrintQuality.plugin, Paper.plugin, and Options.plugin from move PrintQuality.plugin, Paper.plugin, and Options.plugin to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series to get the various print options to show up in the print dialog. Thanks Andy!
118. chipzaroyMarch 14, 2008 @ 07:31 AM
hey guys. i got the 1022 printer to work in leopard, but i don't see any of the options (print quality, etc) is there any way to get these back? I know yogi left a tip above, but it's a bit confusing...
119. juliaMarch 17, 2008 @ 05:49 AM
still not working - there's no 1020 folder, no subfolder, nothing. i don't know what to do and i'm at my wits end. any advice?
120. viviMarch 19, 2008 @ 02:22 PM
i'm using os 10.5.2 i just download the driver from the link above, and don't do anything else, just plug in the printer and turn it on, and apparently the mac finds it itself, because it just appeared in my list of printers, and i did some test and it works fine, also fast as well. perhaps you might want to do a software update first?
121. AnitaMarch 29, 2008 @ 04:56 AM
I seriously love you. Thanks so much for the amazing advice. Finally, my printer is working.
122. francescoApril 10, 2008 @ 02:17 PM
i followed all the instruction but my printer still doesn't work... there is no hp 1020/1022 in the list and nothing in library\printers, even after downloading the driver from hp's site... any suggestion?
123. RobertMay 01, 2008 @ 02:38 AM

Thank you! it's worked on my new iMac with 10.5.3 .... did initially download some a 2007 version of the driver from another website which did not work at all.... thanks !!!
127. YogiJune 30, 2008 @ 06:05 AM
After having to go through this again after rebuilding my laptop, I decided to just package the right files together and create a quick installer. Here it is: http://yogipatel.net/static/HP_Laserjet_1020_Leopard_Driver.dmg Once installed, plug in the printer, go to Printer Setup, and select the printer from the list. The driver should be automatically detected as a "HP LaserJet 1020". I've tested it with all versions of Leopard on intel machines.

Works a treat with my MacBook 10.5.4 - thanks very much!
