Many folks (my mother included) expect the URLbar text to be selected if it gets focus. The idea is that you are providing a whole new URL instead of hand-editting the existing one 99.6% of the time. Firefox/Mozilla makes this configurable. Default value is false (why??!). Changing it is as simple as visiting “about:config”. Filter on “click” and then toggling the “browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll” to true. You need to restart Firefox for this change to take effect.

It's set to false by default on linux, presumably to emulate other linux browsers. It's set to true by default on windows.
